Home Battery Financing: Costs and Subsidies

What Are You Paying For? The Cost Breakdown of a Home Battery

The total cost of a home battery depends heavily on the type you choose and the capacity you need. To understand exactly where that price comes from, you can break it down into four key components.

First and foremost, storage capacity (kWh) plays a decisive role: the larger the battery, the more components and raw materials are required. Next, the inverter and control system are important. Because a battery stores direct current (DC) while your household runs on alternating current (AC), this current must be converted. You can either connect the battery to an existing system or opt for a complete all-in-one system with an integrated inverter and smart control.

The installation and meter box also account for a large portion of the costs. After all, a permanently installed system requires modifications to the meter box by a certified installer. If, on the other hand, you opt for a plug-in home battery, you simply plug it directly into a grounded outlet, and those installation costs are completely eliminated. Finally, smart software rounds out the picture. A good home battery pays for itself much faster when the system learns from your specific usage patterns and intelligently factors in current electricity prices.

Claiming VAT Refunds & Subsidies for Home Batteries

Claim a 21% VAT refund from the Tax Authority

The biggest financial benefit for homeowners is claiming back the 21% VAT on the purchase and installation of the home battery. Because a smart battery allows you to purchase electricity when prices are low and feed it back into the grid when prices are high, the Tax Authority considers you a “VAT-registered business.”

To receive a refund of the 21% VAT, the following conditions apply:

  • Dynamic Energy Contract: You have an energy contract with variable hourly rates in your name.
  • Smart Management System (EMS): The home battery is equipped with software that automatically responds to electricity prices.
  • Correct Account Holder: Both the battery invoice and the energy contract are in the same name.
  • KOR scheme: At the time of application, you are not already enrolled in the Small Business Scheme (KOR) with the Tax Authority.

National, Provincial, and Municipal Subsidies

At the national level, there is currently no direct purchase subsidy (such as the ISDE) available in the Netherlands for private home batteries. However, opportunities do arise regularly at the local level. Various municipalities and provinces (such as through one-time programs in Flevoland, for example) occasionally make incentive funds available to prevent grid overload. It is therefore always wise to check with your local energy information center for current initiatives. Are you purchasing the battery for business purposes, or do you run a home-based business? In that case, in addition to the VAT deduction, you can often take advantage of the Small-Scale Investment Deduction (KIA) to make your investment more tax-efficient.

How can you finance a home battery?

You don’t have to dip into your savings to start benefiting from energy storage right away. There are several ways to spread out the investment, with the monthly energy savings often covering a large portion of the payments.

1. The Energy Savings Loan (National Heat Fund)

This is by far the most popular form of financing in the Netherlands. The National Heat Fund was established by the government to make sustainability accessible to everyone. With this program, you borrow at very favorable rates with a fixed term. For households with a combined income up to a certain threshold, the loan is even completely interest-free in many cases. The great convenience is that you can apply for the loan entirely online without the involvement of a notary, and making additional payments at any time is always 100% penalty-free.

2. Mortgage or Home Improvement Loan

Are you planning to renovate or refinance your mortgage? If so, you can include sustainability measures in your mortgage. Because a home battery increases the value and sustainability of your home, lenders often allow you to borrow more than your maximum mortgage limit.

3. Personal savings

Do you have savings sitting in the bank that earn very little interest? A home battery offers a significantly higher return. You’ll save immediately on your monthly energy bill and avoid feed-in penalties from your energy provider.

Veelgestelde vragen
