Plug-and-play home battery: For those who want to get started quickly with energy storage

What is a plug-and-play home battery?

A plug-and-play home battery is a battery system with a built-in inverter that you can install yourself, without the help of a certified installer. The device is placed near an outlet, connected to the power grid, and linked to an app that controls its charging and discharging behavior. During the day, the battery stores excess solar energy; in the evening or during peak hours, that electricity is fed back into the home.

The main difference from a traditional home battery system lies in the installation: whereas a fixed system is built into the circuit behind the meter box, a plug-and-play home battery operates independently of that infrastructure. This makes the device portable and suitable for rental homes, apartments, and situations where a permanent installation is not desirable.

Most plug-and-play home batteries come with a base capacity of a few kWh and can be expanded in a modular fashion. For an average household, a 5 kWh plug-and-play home battery is often more than enough, while larger households or homes with a heat pump tend to opt for a 10 kWh battery to cover evening and nighttime consumption.

In what situations is a plug-and-play home battery suitable?

A plug-and-play home battery is particularly appealing to households that already have solar panels and want to consume more of the electricity they generate themselves rather than feeding it back into the grid for a small fee. Tenants and apartment dwellers who are not allowed or do not wish to make major modifications to the meter box also often opt for this solution because of its simple installation and the ability to take the system with them when they move.

Which plug-and-play home battery best suits your situation depends on three factors: your annual electricity consumption, the size of your solar panel system, and the times of day when you use the most electricity. A household of two to three people without an electric car typically needs a capacity of around 5 kWh. As soon as you add a heat pump, an electric car, or a high-consumption home office, upgrading to 10 kWh is often a more logical choice to handle evening peaks without the battery running out in the middle of the night.

  • Households with solar panels that want to increase self-consumption
  • Renters and apartment dwellers who cannot install a permanent system
  • Those who want to scale up gradually, for example from 5 kWh to 10 kWh as consumption grows
  • Situations where speed and flexibility are more important than maximum storage capacity

Pros and Cons of a Plug-and-Play Home Battery

The main advantages of a plug-and-play home battery at a glance:

  • Installation in under half an hour, without a certified installer or permit
  • Portable: the system can be moved to a new home
  • Modular and expandable, for example from 5 kWh to 10 kWh, as soon as consumption increases
  • Real-time insight into storage and consumption via a companion app

However, there are a few limitations:

  • Lower maximum capacity than a permanently installed system
  • Not suitable as a complete replacement for the utility connection during a power outage
  • Efficiency loss during charging and discharging, as with any battery system
  • Check certification and warranty terms, as these vary significantly by provider

Installation Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a plug-and-play home battery involves four steps. First, unpack the device and place it in a suitable, dry location, preferably near an outlet and the meter box. Next, connect the battery to the outlet or, depending on the model, link it to a sub-meter that tracks the home’s energy consumption. Then, connect the battery to an app via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, where you can set charging and discharging schedules. Finally, check whether the battery is responding correctly to solar output and energy consumption, which you can usually see in the app within a few hours of installation.

Veelgestelde vragen
