During our trip through China, we had the unique opportunity to visit PowerOak’s manufacturing facilities in Huizhou. PowerOak is the company behind Bluetti, an internationally renowned brand in the field of portable power stations and energy storage.
While we’d spent a lot of time discussing new products and future developments during our previous visits, this day was primarily focused on production. We were eager to see what happens behind the scenes before a Bluetti power station finally makes its way to a customer.
The size of the factory, the production process, and the amount of technical expertise involved were very impressive.
The organization behind Bluetti
In a relatively short period of time, Bluetti has become one of the best-known brands in the portable energy storage market.
Behind the consumer brand is PowerOak, which brings together a significant portion of the expertise in the areas of research, development, and production.
During our visit, it became clear just how much the company values having control over the entire process. A large part of the development and production takes place within the company itself.
This allows PowerOak to closely coordinate the various steps and conduct continuous quality checks throughout the production process.
From individual components to a complete power station
During the tour, we were taken through various stages of the production process.
From the outside, a power station may seem like a relatively simple product: a battery with various connectors and a display. Behind the casing, however, lies a complex energy system in which battery cells, a BMS, an inverter, charging technology, electronics, cooling, and software—among other components—must work together seamlessly.
On the production lines, we could see how different components come together and are ultimately assembled into a complete Bluetti system.
Especially when you work with these products every day, it’s fascinating to look at the process from the opposite direction: not starting with the finished product in our showroom or at the customer’s location, but with the individual components that make up the product.
Inspection During Various Production Phases
Production is only one part of the process.
During the tour, we also saw how quality controls are incorporated into the production process at various stages. Components and complete systems are inspected before a product is finally approved for further distribution.
When it comes to energy storage, this control is particularly important. A power plant must not only be able to deliver the specified power, but also be able to continue doing so safely and reliably over an extended period of time.
Battery management, temperature control, charging behavior, and the operation of the various electronic components all play a role in this.
It was interesting to see how many steps are involved before the final product is ultimately packaged and leaves the factory.
In-house Development and Production
One aspect that particularly stood out to us during the visit was PowerOak’s strong focus on in-house development and production.
By retaining a great deal of technical expertise and production capacity within its own organization, the company can exercise greater control over product quality while also implementing changes more quickly when new technology becomes available or products need to be further improved.
For a manufacturer of energy storage systems, this is a major advantage. The technology is evolving rapidly, and users are placing increasingly high demands on capacity, power, lifespan, safety, and ease of use.
Moreover, these days it involves much more than just portable power stations. Energy storage is being used in an increasingly wide range of applications, from mobile power supplies and RVs to emergency power and home energy storage.
The scale behind the final product
One of the things you really get a sense of when you visit a factory is the scale on which products are manufactured.
As sellers, we ultimately see a Bluetti product arrive at our warehouse or on display in our showroom. In Huizhou, we saw just how many people, machines, technical processes, and quality checks are involved before that same product is ready for shipment.
That gave us a new perspective on the products we’ve been selling for years.
Specifications remain, of course, important when comparing power stations, but production capacity, quality control, and the technical expertise behind a brand are just as relevant to long-term reliability.
Valuable insights for our advice
For Off Grid Power Station, these types of factory visits therefore also serve a practical purpose.
We don’t just want to know what’s on a datasheet. We want to understand who develops a product, how it’s manufactured, and what processes a manufacturer uses to ensure quality.
We ultimately bring that knowledge back with us to the Netherlands and Belgium. It helps us evaluate new products and advise customers who are comparing different brands and systems.
An impressive look behind the scenes
The visit to PowerOak in Huizhou gave us an in-depth look at the organization and production behind Bluetti.
From the production lines and assembly to quality control and testing procedures: it was impressive to see up close just how much technology and expertise are required to manufacture energy storage systems on this scale.
