Power Station for camping

Camping has changed over the years. You no longer have to rely on a deck of cards and a guitar for entertainment (although that’s still fantastic, of course). With the advent of portable power stations, you always have electricity available, wherever you are, including at the campsite.

The advantages of a portable power station while camping.

Of course, the biggest advantage of a portable power station – while camping – is the fact that you always have a power supply available. This is certainly not the only advantage. A few more are described below.

  • Quiet and odorless: electric generators are virtually silent and produce no emissions. This allows you to fully enjoy the peace and quiet of the environment without unpleasant odors, while still having the benefits of a generator.
  • Environmentally friendly: portable power stations can be charged with solar panels. This generates clean energy.
  • Safe: Because portable power stations don’t use fossil fuels, they’re a safe option, especially if you’re camping in the woods. Unlike gas generators, you can also safely use them in a tent or RV to power lights and electrical appliances.
  • Portable: unlike a power outlet (at the campsite), you are not dependent on the location. Most portable power stations have one or more handles, making them easy to take with you.
  • Multiple ways to charge: is your power station empty? Then you have several ways to charge it. Via mains power, EV charging point, petrol generator, car charger or solar panels. So there is always a possibility to charge your power station.

What to look for in portable power station for camping?

There are different brands and types of portable power stations. Each has its unique characteristics. For example, they can be distinguished into: capacity, charging speed, weight and outputs. Below we will discuss these and other characteristics in more detail, so that you can make the right choice.

Type and number of outputs

Power stations come in different shapes and sizes. They also differ in terms of number and type of outputs. Which one is most suitable for your situation depends on which and how many devices you want to charge. If you’re only planning to charge a laptop or mobile, then you’ll only need a handful of ports. If you want to power an entire family’s gear and high-wattage devices, you’ll need something bigger.

Portability

Weight and size are essential factors when camping. The space in your car or motorhome is limited. You also have to ask yourself to what extent the power station should be portable. Do you only use it for outside at the camper? Then a heavier device is suitable. Are you going out with it too? Then consider a lighter device.

Capacity

The capacity of a power station you choose for camping depends on a combination of factors, including the type of devices you want to power and the number of devices. For example, if you plan on running a 50W laptop for about 10 hours, you’ll need a battery with a capacity of at least 500Wh.

Overvoltage

Some devices, especially those with an electric motor, have a current surge that is much higher than their continuous power when switched on. A kettle that needs about 700W will reach a power peak of perhaps 1100W when the device starts. This means that if you plan to power a kettle, you’ll need a portable power station with a peak power of at least 1800W.

Charging speeds and time

Charging speed is largely influenced by the size of the battery itself. So the bigger the generator, the longer it will take to charge. The input is also important. While camping, you often use solar panels or car chargers and in some cases EV or AC chargers. How long it takes to charge a power station via solar energy depends on the input that the generator allows, the efficiency of the solar panel and the wattage. For example, an EcoFlow Delta Max can be charged within 5 to 10 hours with one 400W solar panel. With two solar panels, this takes between 2.4 and 5 hours.

What is the best portable power station for camping?

In general, campers go for a power station from 1000Wh to 2400Wh. This depends on their preferences and needs, for example how long someone will be camping and which electrical appliances will be connected. Below are – our chosen – power stations most suitable for camping. Display from small to large (in terms of power).

Bluetti AC200 Max EU
